Tipping Trainers

Tipping etiquette is a touchy and debatable topic, but the question of tipping personal trainers, Yoga & Pilates instructors, etc. is an issue worth addressing.

While tipping is technically never required, it is something we do to express gratitude for a job well done, and ultimately it is an engrained part of American culture (others as well, to greater and lesser extent).  Overall Americans are generous tippers.

It is standard to tip hair stylists, massage therapists, aestheticians, and other one-on-one service providers between 15% and 20%.  These service providers have undergone special training and are creating a (hopefully) positive experience that clients both want and need.  When it comes to trainers, private exercise instructors and the likes, in theory it should be no different.  Once again this is a specialized individual whom, at least in the case of a comprehensively trained Pilates instructor, has spent many hundreds of hours learning and honing his or her skill set.  A private session is taking place, and individualized attention to specific needs, conditions, concerns, and more are factoring into the interaction.

If you think about it, physical trainers are facilitating physical wellness; from a physiological, purely medical perspective this is very important to living a long, healthy life.  Indeed haircuts and facials are important and beloved services, but someone could suffer from serious and life-threatening conditions and find help through something like Pilates or Yoga (burn fat, build muscle); no one ever died from not enough hair cuts or too few massages.  Having said that, one would think a client would LOVE tipping the health instructor who is making life more livable.

It is also important to consider things like rental space and other costs that instructors incur.  Just like many hair stylists split their earnings with the salon, instructors give a (sometimes very large) percentage of earnings to the studio they use.  Or, if employed by a studio, work at a rate that is often far less than is paid by the customer.

Bottom line, as a society we are not conditioned to tip trainers in the same way as we are hair stylist, massage therapists, etc. and yet these services fall within similar categories.   If you see an instructor 3 times a week a smaller tip is certainly understandable, but overall a Pilates or Yoga instructor or Personal Trainer working in a private setting (versus a big box gym with certain policies) should be viewed like a ‘body’ stylist and tipped accordingly.  Remember, personal exercise instructors/trainers are not dieticians or acupuncturists; those are medical providers and often are dealt with and paid for by insurance companies.

Next time you take a private Pilates or Yoga lesson for $70 consider giving the instructor $10 -$15.  Of course there is no need to tip in group classes – the point is to express gratitude for a customized, individual service.

This is amazing – the city of Seattle is planning to plant and sustain an urban food forest!  Trees, plants, and bushes will yield fruit, vegetables, nuts, and herbs for public consumption.  Listed among the items to be available are apples, pears, blueberries, raspberries, guavas, pineapples, chestnuts, walnuts, herbs and more.

One of the best things about this is that people can get nutrition that was previously unavailable to them due to cost – anyone can take what they need.  Yes problems could arise, but better to deal with some potential issues then to never test out innovative ideas.

Juicing

Has anyone seen the documentary Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead?  If not it is worth the watch and quite an inspiration!

While the film is not about promoting juicing (the practice of drinking your fruits and vegetables), it shows numerous examples of the benefits of allowing the body to receive such a high level of antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, and essential cell building blocks.  If a person tried to eat the amount of fruits and veggies used to make a nice tall glass of fresh juice they might explode.  There is way too much bulk when eating produce if one desires an extremely concentrated level of nutrients in one sitting.

10. There are Many Ways to Learn Pilates

Pilates instruction is easy to come by these days. The ever-growing popularity of Pilates has put it on the map all over the world. This is good because when you start Pilates training, it is important to start with live Pilates instruction at a studio or gym, and from a certified instructor. But there are lots of ways to supplement your learning once you get going. You can practice at home and you don’t need one bit of fancy equipment, just comfy clothes and a mat.

The ‘learning from a certified instructor’ piece is key.  Because Pilates is not a regulated field with uniform certification requirements (like massage or acupuncture) it is important to check into the kind of certification your instructor has.  Someone could take a weekend course and call herself a certified instructor; more appropriately, your instructor will have taken a lengthy comprehensive course full of hundreds of personal practice, observation, and practice teaching hours.  All told, the Body Arts and Science International certification undertaken by yours truly required well over 500 hours of practice/teaching/observation/class time/studying in order to become properly and comprehensively certified in mat and all equipment-based Pilates.

7. Increases Energy

It might seem like a paradox, but the more you exercise, the more energy you have and the more you feel like doing (to a point, of course). Pilates gets the breath and circulation moving, stimulates the spine and muscles, and floods the body with the good feelings one gets from exercising the whole body.

What are we talking about here?  That’s right…ENDORPHINS!  To quote the award-winning movie Legally Blonde, ” Exercise gives you endorphins. Endorphins make you happy. Happy people just don’t shoot their husbands, they just don’t.”  Admittedly we are discussing endorphins in a different context, but the idea is the same: Pilates is great exercise, and exercise increases endorphins.  Endorphins give you a much-needed energy boost, and who does not want more energy!

4. Increases Flexibility

In Pilates, we work toward a safe increase in length and stretch of the muscles and range of motion within the joints. You won’t find quite as much “pretzel logic” in Pilates as you might in yoga, but a body that can stretch and bend to meet the flow of life is a very realistic goal.

Note the words safe and realistic – keeping in mind that some bodies are very flexible while many have injuries and range of motion issues, Pilates works to be gentle on bodies while building the strength needed to prevent injury and support both athletic and every day activities.

So remember: Sunday is a great day for Pilates!  While not many exercise classes typically take place on Sunday (beyond the morning) at Springwater Pilates we are now starting some Sunday afternoon classes to help you ease back into your work week.  Come check us out!


Cake…Important!

See, cake really was on the birthday menu!  Live vicariously through a fabulous Papa Haydn Boccone Dolce (meringue layers with whip cream, strawberries and banana, and chocolate drizzle) and Parisian macarons in pistachio and salted caramel.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The food only last a little while, but a beautiful and thoughtful gift last a lifetime.  Among a few great items, the diamond heart necklace is a standout AND is perfect because it is lightweight, stays in one spot, and can be worn during a workout!

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Once the indulgence is over, pick back up where you left off and hit the gym/the mountain/the studio, or wherever you like to get your sweat on!

As it so happens, today is my birthday!  Getting this website up and running before the big day was a huge priority, and mission accomplished.  It is exciting to be here promoting Rachel Rettman – Fitness. Nutrition. Lifestyle.  Most of all, joy comes from helping people to realize their myriad health and fitness goals.

Birthdays and special events can be challenging for people who take fitness and nutrition seriously…like me!  I want to go all out and let myself eat fun foods, cake, candy, and ice cream (hello sugar junkie) but wrestle with guilt over not eating in a natural, well-balanced and nutritious fashion.  Honestly, this guilt can take the fun out of the very celebration at hand, and that is never productive.

Balance is an essential part of leading a sustainably healthy lifestyle.  Give a little, and at times take a little.  So, on special events go ahead and let yourself do whatever you want.  Eat the cake, the whole thing if you want!  Get that big steak with a side of mashed potatoes, or whatever you most crave and love.  A cheat day here and there will not derail your progress…in fact, when you body encounters foods it does not usually eat your metabolism get excited about the change and revs up to handle the foreign items!  See…junk food IS good for you!

As I say these things to you, I also say them to myself.  Go easy on you, be kind to you, give you a break!

So grab that cupcake, drink your champagne, and celebrate a cheat day because it will make you all the more dedicated to your daily fitness goals!!
