What is Functional Fitness??
The wellness industry is filled with buzz words and new fitness regimens, sometimes to the point of confusion. With the sheer number of choices and programs out there, it can be prohibitively difficult to figure out what is right for you and what makes the most sense for your specific physical needs and goals. There are many ways to arrive at one’s chosen destination; regardless of methodology, the most important things to consider are safety and efficacy. Here is where functional fitness comes in.
Functional fitness means that the goal of working out is preparing your body so it can perform daily activities – walking, bending, lifting, climbing stairs, sitting at your computer — without pain, injury or discomfort. Instead of spot-training specific parts of the body, functional training integrates the whole body so that muscles begin to strengthen, work together, and recruit as a group rather than independently. The result is more efficient movement, less tension in muscles, joints, and tendons, and a stronger body that performs better under myriad conditions. Be it sitting at a desk at work or moving furniture, functional fitness is there to teach people how to physically move and exist for longevity.
It is important to note that along with functional strength training comes vital body awareness that influences the ability to move throughout the day in a more effective way. Integrated, fluid movement patterns enable us develop better proprioception (our understanding of our body, how different parts work together and our unique movement patterns). Benefits include improved balance and increased range of motion.
Functional fitness borrows from disciplines such as Pilates and Yoga, and therefore Pilates is one of the best functional training programs available. There is a reason why Pilates has thrived for more than 100 years – it helps people to feel better and move more safely each and every day!
